Paul Whelan was imprisoned in Russia where he was treated roughly and was sentenced to 16 years in prison. He was accused of spying which was denied by him and the U.S. government. This was a major crime that was treated harshly when another country found out that you were spying on them. The government tried so hard to ensure he was released as they had a high level of negotiation between the U.S. and Russia.

Whelan was later released alongside a Wall Street journalist reporter Evan Gershkovich. Whelan and Gershkovich were happily received upon their return to the U.S. by their families and government officials. Paul Whelan survived nearly five years of captivity and detention where he proved his strong health and his great progress.

The case brought fear to the Americans who were traveling abroad as they saw the danger they encountered because of their diplomatic relations. By the grace of God, Paul Whelan was released on Ist of August 2024 after his long period of detention since 2020.
